Biography

In the spring of 1902, Robert and Josephine Flanigan arrived on the docks of New York, after long and gruelling months spent aboard the HMS Majestic. Along with their eldest son, Jacob, the family hoped to build a better future in America. They quickly settled in a cramped apartment shared with two other families in Hoboken, New Jersey. Josephine had been carrying a baby from the time they had landed, and on the 10th of October that year, their youngest son, Jason James Flanigan, was born.

The first few years in the new country were tough. Josephine toiled in a textile mill and Robert got odd jobs here and there. They worked long hours, struggling to put bread on the table for their growing boys. Jacob and James spent most of their time under the care of their neighbours, as their parents were rarely able to make it home early. On the front steps of their apartment, Jacob would tell James stories. Stories crafted from his own imagination and stories that told of Ireland's tapestry of myths and legends. To James, Jacob was his role model and his protector, despite their age gap of ten years, the Flanigan brothers shared
a close bond and were inseparateable.

When James was eight, his father, who had been slowly moving his way up from being a lowly shipbuilder to becoming the owner of a quaint pub, befriended a man by the name of Étienne Durand, who discovered the establishment by recommendation. Monsieur Durand was the owner of a cheese importing company and was well-known in the upperclass society. He took a fondness for the Flanigans and even went so far as welcoming them into his own home as family. Jacob and James looked to Monsieur Durand as a grandfather-figure.

Eventually, the family came to be introduced to New York's underground organized crime operations. Monsieur Durand himself was the leader of a gang called Le Roi Blanc- "The White King". The gang was top-notched, exclusive only to those of high social standing and those within Durand's inner circle of friends. Luckily, Mr. Flanigan was in very good terms with Durand, getting into Roi Blanc wasn't too difficult. Having connections with a notorious gang meant expanding business opportunities and protection for the family. Soon enough, Robert Flanigan along with Jacob joined Le Roi Blanc, bearing their fleur-de-lis and Lion of St. Mark's crest with pride. James, who was eager to follow his big brother, yearned to become one of the gang's "lions" but his mother, a devout Catholic, thought that two men in the family involved in crime was more than enough.

Mr. Flanigan's predictions were right. Their pub expanded into a chain of successful breweries situated in many locations in the East Coast. Jealous competitors were easily quashed by Le Roi Blanc. The Flanigans prospered. That is, for a short while. Robert Flanigan was ambitious and kept on borrowing money from Durand to support his business. But then, disaster struck as the tensions in Europe finally exploded into the "Great War". Trade between European countries and the States suffered greatly as German U-boats dotted the Atlantic. Both Durand's importing company and the Flanigans' breweries experienced the impact, the latter being the one hit the hardest. Due to finances amassed from crime, Durand was able to
withstand the economic blow whereas the breweries slowly closed, one by one. With not only a business going bankrupt but also an outstanding debt to pay, the relationship between Robert and Étienne turned sour. The gang hounded the family for payment, forcing Mr. Flanigan and his family to be displaced from the comforts of their home into a life of running. Jacob, who was a man of pride, decided that he didn't want to be coward. Rallying up a small gang of friends, he attempted to confront Durand and take his money. This plan goes horribly wrong, resulting in a fight and Jacob's death.
